What You Need to Know About Moderna Side Effects and Facial Fillers

As COVID-19 vaccination efforts continue, many individuals with hyaluronic acid facial dermal fillers are wondering if it's safe to receive the Moderna vaccine. According to recent studies, the vaccine has been associated with mild side effects in some patients who have undergone filler treatments.

A study published by Dr. Grant-Kels from the UConn School of Medicine Department of Dermatology found that the incidence rate of local injection site reactions following Moderna vaccination ranged from 5.5 percent to 23.7 percent. These reactions may include swelling, redness/erythema, and/or pain, which are usually not cause for concern.

In fact, existing reports suggest that the overall safety profile of mRNA COVID-19 vaccines is compelling, with benign skin reactions being a common occurrence. According to co-author Christian Gronbeck, MD, these cutaneous reactions are typically not a cause for concern and can be easily treated by medical staff if necessary.

The study reviewed literature published as of May 2021 and analyzed data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (CDC-VAERS). The researchers found that inflammatory responses to HA filler following vaccine administration are not unique to Moderna's COVID-19 vaccine. Similar reactions have been reported with vaccines against other viruses, although they are generally mild and treatable.

Dr. Purvi Parikh, an allergist and immunologist, explained that a filler is considered a foreign body by the immune system, which can lead to inflammation in areas where fillers are present. This is because the immune system is designed to counteract any foreign substance.

The study highlighted three cases of facial or lip swelling after receiving the Moderna vaccine, with two participants having filler in their cheeks and one having lip filler at the time of vaccination. One participant had received filler two weeks prior to vaccination, while another had done so six months prior.

In response to these findings, FDA medical officer Dr. Rachel Zhang noted that three people developed facial or lip swelling after receiving the Moderna vaccine during the company's phase 3 trial. The FDA advisory committee also reported several cases of temporary facial swelling localized in areas with filler treatment following vaccination.

While these side effects are generally mild and treatable, it's essential for individuals with hyaluronic acid facial dermal fillers to consult with their healthcare provider before receiving the Moderna vaccine.
